Beer vs. Wine - Why Choose When You Can Have Both!

by Monica Bennion on January 02, 2017

It's that time again!  Time for our next "Beer vs. Wine" Dinner on January 12, 2017!  If you missed the sold out event last year, NOW is the time to get your tickets to this one-of-a-kind dinner event.  The 2017 "Beer vs. Wine" Dinner event will be held at the Volcano Union Pub + Inn in historic downtown Volcano, CA.  The team at Volcano Union Pub + Inn has magically and masterfully crafted a menu to compliment wines produced by Scott Harvey and beers from Cool Beerworks out of Cool, CA.  Seating is limited...Don't miss this once-a-year event!

Our assistant Tasting Room Manager, Nicole, has written a wonderful blog describing the experience from our first "Beer vs. Wine" Dinner in 2016.  She shares with us how this idea was born all the way through the dinner event itself.

"As Scott addressed the room full of people that had joined us for our sold out Beer VS Wine dinner at the Volcano Union Inn + Pub, I found myself taking a moment to reflect on how we got here to the magical end of this wonderful and challenging journey.  It must first be known that I have been in the industry for six years.  I have been a part of my fair share of Winemaker’s Dinners and have hosted my fair share of Beer Pairing Dinners.  The idea came to me one day while enjoying a pint after work at Sutter Creek Provisions in historic downtown Sutter Creek, CA.  I started to talk with Darin, proprietor at Sutter Creek Provisions, about the idea of a beer and wine pairing dinner and he mentioned that he had done one in the past with great success so I thought “This is PERFECT for us.”  We all know that it takes “a lot of good beer to make wine” and that every winemaker (at least all the ones I have met) loves their beer thirty during harvest so why not combine the two things we adore into one must attend dinner.

2015 Harvest Report - Harvest Widow: The Life of the Winemaker's Wife During Harvest

by Jana on September 04, 2015

As my husband, Scott Harvey, embarks on his 42nd harvest, I prepare myself for not seeing much of him for the next six weeks or so. Of course, this year could be much quicker with an early short harvest. Better for me but not better for Scott. With all the grapes coming in at the same time, it can get quite chaotic. This will be the 19th harvest I've been through with him, and it never seems to get much easier. This year can be the most difficult of all! We have moved our production to Amador County so I might only see Scott one, maybe two days a week, if I'm lucky since we still call Napa Valley our home base. Being a winemaker's wife has its challenges.

To get an idea of what a winemaker's life is like in a few minutes, view this short video.

After 42 years, Scott has never seen grapes in Amador County this ripe on September 1st. Harvest 2015 has been most unusual. On September 2nd, he has already crushed two of our Zinfandel vineyards; the Bowman vineyard and the Norton vineyard. The latter once belonging to Scott's grandfather, George DeMille.

Tips for Hosting a Food and Wine Pairing Party

Drink Your Wine - Week #5
Host a Wine & Food Pairing Party

Last week you impressed your guests and hosted your very own fancy Dinner Party. This week, relax a little and have your guests do the pairing by fixing something to pair with one of your wines. Fire up some healthy and fun competition by hosting a Wine Pairing Party.

GETTING STARTED
Selecting Wines – Select four or five wines from your collection. Choose a specific variety, region or vintage.

Invite Guests – This pairing party is a casual event, so invitations by email or Facebook Event are good ways to reach out to your guests. Let your guests know the wines you have selected, and include any links or information about the wine you may have that would be helpful to your guests (i.e. winemaker’s notes, tasting notes, specifications and components, etc.) Get Our Spec Sheets

Food Pairings - Ask each guest to pick a wine for which they would like to prepare a food pairing. If you have a theme, you can suggest a cuisine or region to help direct your guests. For instance, if you’ve selected a variety of Barberas, you may want to encourage your guests to browse Italian recipes. Encourage your guests to make their recipe in a tapas or appetizer style for easy serving.

Supplies - Since this is a casual affair, and you did a lot of work last week at your Dinner Party, we’re going to make things a little easier for this party. Bust out the festive paper plates, napkins, toothpicks and plastic utensils. Do make sure you use your good stemware though; you want your wines to taste their best.

DRINK YOUR WINE – WEEK 4
Tips for Hosting a Dinner Party

Now that you’ve had a blast with your Blind Tasting Party, spent some quality time with your sweetheart on Date Night and dusted off and organized the bottles from your Cellar Cleaning, it’s time show off your skills in the kitchen, and the wines from your collection, by Hosting a Dinner Party!

This is your chance to pull out all the stops for your guests and give them something to talk about for years to come. In this blog post, we will outline a few of the Do’s and Don’ts for hosting a dinner party, and guide through a sample menu including recipes and wine pairings.

DO’S & DON’TS – 2-3 Weeks Out

  • DO send out invitations 14-21 days before the party, and request an RSVP. Go “old school” and send out paper invitations. Yes, they still make them (and don’t forget the stamps). The kind of invitation you choose can help set the mood or theme for the evening. If you plan on having a theme, encourage your guests to dress up accordingly.
  • DO plan the music. If you have a theme you plan to go with, find music to fit. For instance, if you are hosting a “black tie” style dinner party, look for some classical background music. If you’re planning a Mardi Gras style party, look for a Pandora station that has some Zydeco and Jazz.
  • DON’T over think the menu. Stick with tried and true recipes you’ve perfected, or, if you’ve found a new recipe that you think would be perfect, practice it a few times before the party to make sure you’ve got it down. If you’re offering hors d’oeuvres, make sure they are simple and not too filling.
  • DO select your wines and beverages to accompany your menu. Do plan to have aperitifs (def. a small alcoholic drink served before the meal) available to your guests when they arrive. Delicate white wine, gin, vermouth and Champagne are classic aperitifs.
