July is a “fair” time to be in Northern California! And we’re not referring to the weather, it’s HOT! July in Northern California means it is state and county fair time. This year marks the 163rd California State Fair, (50th year at the Cal Expo venue), which runs from July 14th thru July 30th ,2017. The Amador County Fair, with history as far back as 1887, is always the last weekend in July, and this year runs from July 27th thru July 30th.
Originally, state and county fairs were held for the purpose of exhibition and competition of livestock, produce and other agricultural goods and equipment. While the agricultural competitions are still the foundation of our state and county fairs, over the years the events and entertainment at fairs have risen to an entirely new level. Our fairs today have food eating competitions, concerts, rodeos, destruction derbies, carnival rides and games, beer and wine competitions, vendors selling the next best product…and of course there’s the food! Fried anything, and usually on a stick!
It may be the heat talking or too much time on the Ferris wheel, but we thought it would be fun to pick some of the classic fair fare and pair them with your favorite Scott Harvey and Jana wines. Since taking your own wine to the fair is likely frowned upon, we’ve included links to recipes so you can easily replicate these delightful fair treats in your own kitchen. Let’s nosh!
